This would have to be my 2nd most anticipated 3DS game of E3 so far. Check out a brief description courtesy of Vooks.net below, then see the E3 Trailer, images & screenshots and the official Nintendo speil after the jump.

While the Wii U got most of the attention at Nintendo’s press conference for E3 2012, New Super Mario Bros. 2, an upcoming 3DS title was also given a quick showing.

While gameplay details are currently quite scarce, the game appears to be delving into Mario’s obsession with coins, and turning everything gold! An abundance of coins can be seen in the trailer shown below as well as new mysterious Gold Koopa, Gold Power-Ups and of course MORE GOLD COINS!

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is currently due for release in the Americas on August 19th 2012 and in a first for the 3DS, both at retail as a physical copy and via the eShop as a digital copy.

We’re sure we’ll receive it here in Australia sometime around then too. Stay tuned for more updates which will no doubt be given tomorrow.

Expect many bad Olympic related puns for this image (i.e. "Mario goes for gold...")

The official spiel on the Nintendo E3 website reads like this:

Mario Hits the Mushroom Kingdom Jackpot

Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, but this time, Mario has another objective. The Mushroom Kingdom is bursting with more gold coins than before. Each level is littered with gold as coins rain down from overhead pipes, trails of coins are left behind special gold enemies and gold pipes transport Mario into coin-filled caverns. It's up to players to collect as many coins as possible throughout their adventure.

Features:

The game records all the coins players collect throughout the game, so completing a level is only part of the fun. Every level is filled with golden opportunities, such as gold rings that turn enemies into valuable gold versions and a Gold Flower that gives Mario the ability to turn almost anything in his path into coins.
The return of Raccoon Mario gives Mario the ability to fly and access hidden areas.

Players will have the option to either purchase the game at retail stores or download the entire game through the Nintendo eShop.
